New code of practice for premises wiring released

New code of practice for premises wiring released

The Telecommunications Carriers’ Forum has released the new Premises Wiring Code of Practice which is intended to “future-proof” the communications wiring in homes and small offices.

The new code sets out the principles and practices for planning, installing and maintaining premises wiring so that it will be able to meet the future communication and entertainment needs of the modern “intelligent home”.

The voluntary code sets minimum requirements, acceptable practices, verification and qualification testing, and compliance certification. It is expected to be adopted by professional installers such as electricians and satellite service companies.

The code was drawn up by a TCF working party made up of representatives from Chorus, Orcon, Telecom Retail, TelstraClear, Vector Communications, Vodafone, Telecom Wholesale and WorldxChange.

According to TCF chief executive David Stone, the new Premises Wiring Code of Practice is particularly important now that work is underway on developing the Government’s ultrafast broadband (UFB) initiative. The aim of the initiative is to provide UFB services to 75 percent of New Zealanders within the next 10 years.

Mr Stone says the new code will help make sure that houses are wired so they can get the full benefit of future developments and requirements, such as fibre to the premises (FTTP).

"We are delighted to have come up with a code that will provide a single unified reference for providing platforms capable of delivering next-generation products and services within New Zealand homes and businesses.”
