Affordable private accommodation offered at high country ski resort this winter

An award winning backpacker lodge in Methven, home to Mt Hutt ski area, is now offering travellers on a budget the opportunity to stay in affordable private accommodation.

Pinedale Backpacker Lodge, which won the Backpacker Category in the 2009 Ashburton District Tourism Awards, has extended its property to include a private, self-catering apartment for three people.

Penny Turnbull, owner of Pinedale Lodge, said the apartment, which has double glazing and air conditioning, was cosy and warm offering the ideal winter base.

Built in 2002 and separate from the backpacker lodge, the apartment was renovated last year to include a full-sized kitchen with modern stainless steel appliances, a kitchen bar facing the morning sun (and hot air balloons), a lounge, bathroom, double bedroom and single bedroom (or additional lounge space), and a separate storage room for ski gear or golf clubs.

Mrs Turnbull said the private garden with mountain views and barbeque was perfect for après-ski.

“Having the apartment means we can cater for different needs as not everyone travelling on a budget wants to share communal facilities”, says owner Penny Turnbull. “We’re expecting the apartment to be very popular with the over 30's age-bracket who are either holidaying with mates, on a romantic getaway or those with small children who want privacy and space”.

Following on from its success at the Ashburton District Tourism Awards last year, Mrs Turnbull said the lodge continued to enjoy great on-line guest ratings.

“Guests can still expect the great levels of service and attention to detail that Pinedale is now renowned for.”
In 2009 Pinedale began offering mountain transport to their guests to Mt Hutt as well as the club ski fields in Arthurs Pass and apartment guests will also be able to take advantage of this optional extra.

Pinedale also provides comfortable, fun and inexpensive backpacker accommodation operating all year round that sleeps up to 24 guests. There are two adjoining living areas each with a fire, couches and long wooden dining tables. There's a pool table, internet and wireless, and drying and storage facilities. The kitchen has a dishwasher two ovens, two fridges and plenty of storage space. The bedrooms and veranda have mountain views.
