Revised safety Standards for prams and cots available
Two important Standards that provide safety requirements for prams and cots have been revised.
Prams
Prams and strollers – Safety requirements AS/NZS 2088:2009. AS/NZS 2088:2009 provides manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, retailers, authorities, and resellers of prams and strollers with improved minimum safety requirements, to reduce the likelihood of injury to children.
AS/NZS 2088:2009 has been revised in response to incidents where children have been left unattended, or unrestrained, and other occurrences where strollers have rolled away from carers.
New tests have been developed and included to address:
-stability against overbalancing -small parts -hazardous gaps and openings -dynamic strength of locking and latching devices -harness configuration.
AS/NZS 2088:2009 specifies materials, construction, performance, and labelling requirements for prams, strollers, and their accessories. The Standard includes detailed requirements for accessories and stringent testing on strollers, including 3-wheeled or ‘jogging’ strollers.
Folding cots
A revised Standard for Folding cots – Safety requirements AS/NZS 2195:2010, has been published.
AS/NZS 2195:2010:
-provides manufacturers with functional, durability, stability, and performance criteria to reduce the likelihood of death or injury to infants in folding cots -incorporates requirements for accessories such as bassinets, change tables, mosquito nets. The Standard specifically addresses the need for better marking and labelling requirements to prevent potential entrapment and suffocation hazards associated with these accessories, if the accessories are not used or assembled according to manufacturers' instructions -provides regulatory authorities with essential safety requirements.
