ACP Magazines Score Multiple Wins at Qantas Media Awards

ACP Magazines enjoyed spectacular success in the 2010 Qantas Media Awards, announced on Friday night.

New Metro editor Simon Wilson was named Magazine Senior Feature Writer of the Year. North & South/Metro editor-at-large Donna Chisholm and North & South senior writer Mike White were also finalists for this award.

Wilson also won two other awards on the night: the Politics magazine feature writing award for his story on the Mt Albert by-election, “40 Days of Night: The Humiliation of Melissa Lee”; and the Arts magazine feature writing award for “The Culture Wars”. The feature writer of the year award continues a strong tradition for Metro. Wilson’s two most recent predecessors, Bevan Rapson and Lauren Quaintance, have both previously won the award.

Metro art director Charlie McKay picked up the award for best magazine designer while North & South contributor Anna Crichton won the award for Best Artwork. North & South picked up four magazine feature writing awards. Editor-at-large Donna Chisholm won the Crime & Justice category for her cover story “Seeking Justice for Jason”; she also won the Science & Environment category for her story on New Zealand’s IVF programme, “NZ’s First Test Tube Baby turns 25”.

North & South senior writer Mike White won the Profile category for magazine feature writing for “Brave Cop, Classroom Hero” – an insightful cover story about cop turned miracle-working school counsellor Nigel Hendrikse.

North & South contributing writer Amanda Cropp won the Human Relations category for magazine feature writing for her feature story on refugee resettlement in New Zealand, “No Refuge”.

CEO Paul Dykzeul said ACP Magazines’ success at the 2010 Qantas Awards reflected the winning titles’ commitment to quality journalism and design. “The Qantas Media Awards are New Zealand’s premium journalism awards and we are delighted with the wins we achieved on Friday night,” says Dykzeul.
