87% New Zealanders Say No to the ETS

87% New Zealanders Say No to the ETS

New Zealanders over 55 do not think the Emissions Trading Scheme should continue to be introduced when seven out of 10 of New Zealand’s main trading partners have not introduced similar schemes.

In a poll released today, 87% of Seniors Card members who participated in an online poll think that the ETS should not continue to be introduced.

Peter Cox, Seniors Card Managing Diector, says “It’s clear that there is a great deal of suspicion about this scheme which is partly due to the public’s lack of understanding over the ETS, as well as concerns over increased prices.”

He says Seniors Card urges the Government to monitor price rises, especially in the utilities sector, to ensure that companies do not take advantage of the situation.

“If introduced, it would also be critical for our country’s leaders to push for all countries to adopt an ETS scheme so that New Zealand is not disadvantaged in world markets.”

The Poll asked “Do you think New Zealand should continue to introduce the Emissions Trading Scheme, which will push up prices, when other countries are not abiding by the same rules?”

While the majority result returned a negative response, nine percent were in support of the scheme and four percent, undecided.

Seniors Card is a member community providing social and financial benefits for the 55+ demographic in New Zealand. It offers members exclusive buying privileges, including discounted travel both within New Zealand and overseas.
