Car Sales Remain Strong – And Well Ahead of Industry Predictions
June new vehicle sales continue on the upward trend with 5,786 cars (up 34% on June 2009) the highest monthly sales number for twenty months. There were 2,218 commercial vehicles registered which was up 22% on June 2009. Year to date new cars are ahead of 2009 by 17.4%. After a slow start to the year commercial vehicle sales are also ahead of 2009 year to date sales by 807 units which is up 9.6%.
“It is really encouraging to see these numbers”, said Perry Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association. “At the beginning of the year we were forecasting around 10% growth on 2009 numbers. So far this year we are 17.4 % ahead. We have now had six continuous months of growth in new car sales so we are hopeful that we have well and truly turned the corner on 2009”.
In the passenger car segment Toyota remains in number one position(1,337 registrations) with Hyundai taking the number two spot (579 registrations), Holden was third (542 registrations). Year to date has Toyota number one (5,228) Holden second (3,222) and Ford third (2,963).
Toyota also took out first place in commercial vehicles (771 registrations) Ford second (351 registrations) and Nissan third (261 registrations). Year to date these positions remain unchanged with Toyota selling a total of 3,123 vehicles, Ford 1,282 and Nissan 1,097.
In June the top three selling passenger cars were all from Toyota, first the Toyota Rav4 (421 registrations), with an equal number of Toyota Corolla and Land Cruiser Prada sold (219 registrations). Toyota also sold the most commercial vehicles with the Hilux in fact the top selling model for the month with 539 registrations. This was followed by the Nissan Navara (256 registrations) followed by the Ford Ranger (250 registrations).
