Vector Fibre Leaves Copper Broadband Behind

Vector Fibre Leaves Copper Broadband Behind

Vector is on target to connect its residential and business customers in Hobsonville to multi-gigabit fibre network speeds.

Vector has laid the ducting for dozens of homes due to be built at Hobsonville Point – Auckland’s newest coastal community and will soon connect the first business in the development to fibre.

Chief Executive Simon Mackenzie says the company is working closely with service providers on the development of a residential fibre network package that will operate on multiple 10Gbit/s optical backhaul links into Vector’s Ethernet network.

It will allow people to fully utilise the potential of Vector’s extensive fibre network, part of which loops from North Shore to Henderson, making the Hobsonville Point connectivity easily achievable, says Mr Mackenzie.

“The entire community at Hobsonville Point will be provided with multi-gigabit network speeds,” says Mr Mackenzie.

Mr Mackenzie believes provision of a true, high speed, open access, fibre network at Hobsonville Point will enable people to easily work from home, assist businesses with greater operational efficiency and provide better educational opportunities.

It is a view firmly shared by Hobsonville Land Company (HLC) Chief Executive Sean Bignell.

“Hobsonville Point will become a community where residents can live, learn work and play and fibre connectivity enhances those opportunities,” says Mr Bignell.

“We expect construction of the first residential dwellings to be complete early to mid 2011 at which point a number of community facilities will also be up and running, including a café, project information centre, community hall, walkways, cycleways, tennis courts, and play areas.”

Mr Mackenzie says Vector is working closely with HLC (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Housing NZ Corporation) on the project to provide a total solution for an open access ultra-fast fibre network, electricity infrastructure and smart energy management.

He says Hobsonville Point’s first business will benefit from fibre when it opens in August.

“Future proofing electricity and telecommunications infrastructure at Hobsonville Point will enable the uptake of new and emerging technologies by residents,” says Mr Mackenzie.

Over the next 10-15 years, over 3000 homes and businesses will be connected to Vector’s ultra-fast fibre network as the population eventually grows to around 10,000 people living, learning and working at Hobsonville Point. Two schools and retail areas are also planned for the 167ha site.
