Local Magazine Achieves National Recognition

Havelock North-based Upstart Magazine ‘The Kiwi Kids’ Mag With Everything!’ was named 2010 Magazine of the Year, Youth & Pop Culture category, at The Magazine Awards held in Auckland on Thursday night.

And its publisher and editor, Susan Hoyle, was named Editor of the Year in the same category.

Teen publication, Crème Magazine was highly commended.

Upon announcing the awards, the judging panel described Upstart Magazine as:
“Fresh, fun and lively. Punches above its weight. Serves an important niche market, and this is recognised by the alliances it has established. Has a vision and purpose that demonstrates the power of magazines and the way they can create and enable change. It is making a real difference as an advocate for its readers.”

The judging criteria for Magazine of the Year included: Editorial positioning and content; commercial success; and design and presentation.

The judges also commented on Susan Hoyle’s performance as Editor:
“Clever editing, a safe and readable magazine.Vibrant, interactive and stimulating. Perfectly pitched and managed by an obviously passionate and deeply involved editor. Full of energy – a reflection of its audience. Great work-life project and a positive role model for kids.

The judging criteria for Editor of the Year included: philosophy, editorial position and content, managerial acumen, design and presentation.
Upstart Magazine is published independently by Syrup Publishing Ltd, which is owned by Sam and Sue Hoyle. The magazine is only in its fourth year of publication and was up against more established magazines owned by some of NZ’s larger publishing houses.

Healthy Food Guide was named Supreme Magazine of the Year and Kate Coughlan from NZ House & Garden was named Supreme Editor of the Year. Fashion icon and entrepreneur Paula Ryan was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Magazine Publishers’ Association.
