Magazine Achieves National Recognition
Havelock North-based Upstart Magazine ‘The Kiwi Kids’ Mag With Everything!’ was named 2010 Magazine of the Year, Youth & Pop Culture category, at The Magazine Awards held in Auckland on Thursday night.
And its publisher and editor, Susan Hoyle, was named Editor of the Year in the same category.
Teen publication, Crème Magazine was highly commended.
Upon announcing the awards, the judging
panel described Upstart Magazine as:
“Fresh, fun
and lively. Punches above its weight. Serves an important
niche market, and this is recognised by the alliances it has
established. Has a vision and purpose that demonstrates the
power of magazines and the way they can create and enable
change. It is making a real difference as an advocate for
its readers.”
The judging criteria for Magazine of the Year included: Editorial positioning and content; commercial success; and design and presentation.
The
judges also commented on Susan Hoyle’s performance as
Editor:
“Clever editing, a safe and readable
magazine.Vibrant, interactive and stimulating. Perfectly
pitched and managed by an obviously passionate and deeply
involved editor. Full of energy – a reflection of its
audience. Great work-life project and a positive role model
for kids.
The judging criteria for Editor of the Year
included: philosophy, editorial position and content,
managerial acumen, design and presentation.
Upstart
Magazine is published independently by Syrup Publishing Ltd,
which is owned by Sam and Sue Hoyle. The magazine is only in
its fourth year of publication and was up against more
established magazines owned by some of NZ’s larger
publishing houses.
Healthy Food Guide was named
Supreme Magazine of the Year and Kate Coughlan from NZ
House & Garden was named Supreme Editor of the Year.
Fashion icon and entrepreneur Paula Ryan was awarded the
Lifetime Achievement Award by the Magazine Publishers’
Association.
