Pie-loving Kiwis invited to create Wild Bean Cafe’s next champion pie

Pie-loving Kiwis now have the chance to create their own pie and see it sold nationwide. Backed by Wild Bean Cafe, “Create the pie you love” is an online competition that aims to harness the culinary expertise of pie-lovers around the country.

People enter by going to the Wild Bean Cafe website, choosing their preferred combination of ingredients and giving their pie a name. Three pies will be shortlisted and made in the Wild Bean Cafe pie baker’s factory, and will be taste-tested by a judging panel. The finalists will be flown to Auckland for the judging event and the winner will be announced on the day.

The winning pie will then be made and sold through Wild Bean Cafe’s 79 stores nationwide, and the winner will receive *$5,000.

Frank van Hattum, Head of Retail for Wild Bean Cafe, says they are looking forward to introducing a new pie to their range, and believe the best place to go for inspiration is to pie-lovers themselves.

“Customers love it when we introduce new fillings to our pie range, so we thought we’d open the opportunity up to all New Zealanders to have a go at creating their own favourite pie. There’s no doubt we are a pie-loving nation, consuming tens of millions of pies a year – so where better to go for our next pie flavour, than to the ones who know pies best?”

The judging panel will include “Simon”, the pie-loving character on the recent series of Wild Bean Cafe advertisements, who will represent the “people’s choice”.

Entries for “Create the pie you love” close at midnight on Sunday, August 15. Judging will take place on August 30 and the winning pie will be in Wild Bean Cafe stores the week commencing 6 September 2010.
