Record Entry Numbers for 2010 Roading Excellence Awards

Roading New Zealand has received a record number of entries for the 2010 Roading Excellence Awards.

This year there will be 33 projects competing across six categories with one supreme winner to be announced during a gala dinner at the Duxton in Wellington on September 27.

Roading New Zealand chief executive Chris Olsen said, despite the tough economic climate, the industry had continued to produce exciting and innovative projects.

He said it was good to see a wide scope of entries, which ranged from relatively small traffic improvements to major motorway works.

The new-for-2010 Goughs Excellence Award for a Medium Road Project category - for works valued from $5 million to $25 million - received five entries.

“The continued strong response to the Roading Excellence Awards shows the sector acknowledges the importance of celebrating innovation, excellence and collaboration, as well as the benefits of winning such accolades,” Mr Olsen said.

Entries also came from a broad geographic area. The Greenstone Energy Award for a Major Road Project received entries from the West Coast, Wellington, Tauranga and Auckland.

The Roading Excellence Awards aim to promote leadership, excellence and best practice in the provision of land transport infrastructure. Entry is open to all organisations involved in roading projects carried out within New Zealand.

Mr Olsen said Roading New Zealand encouraged entries from those involved in all stages of road projects, from contractors to local authorities, consultants and the New Zealand Transport Agency.

This was best reflected in the InfraTrain New Zealand Best Practice Award Procurement which received nine entries, including projects by four councils, NZTA, a consultancy and several contractors.
