DB Breweries Supports Majority of Alcohol Reform

Media Release
23rd August 2010

DB Breweries Supports Majority of Alcohol Reform Recommendations

DB Breweries says it broadly supports the comprehensive package announced today by the Minister of Justice, Simon Power, regarding proposed actions to reduce alcohol harm.

Managing Director Brian Blake says the Government has carefully considered the wide range of recommendations made by the Law Commission and interested parties on ways in which alcohol harm could be reduced.

“The Government has clearly listened to the substantial evidence presented to it over the past 18 months and taken a pragmatic approach towards finding solutions to reduce the abuse and misuse of alcohol by a minority of New Zealanders.

“It is widely accepted that there are no quick solutions to alcohol harm and that a portfolio of measures are needed. Tighter restrictions around licensing and access to alcohol, greater parental responsibility in supplying alcohol to minors, along with the other measures announced today will certainly help. However regulation alone will not solve the problem.

“Currently the onus is on the industry to do all it can to ensure alcohol is supplied, sold and consumed in a responsible manner but there is no personal accountability for those that choose to abuse it and cause harm to themselves and others, unless they are caught drink driving or physically hurt someone.”

He says the industry will be carefully looking at the details of today’s announcement and will continue to work closely with government and its agencies to support positive changes that will make a real difference.

Brian Blake is managing director of DB Breweries Limited as well as chairman of the Brewers Association of Australia and New Zealand.
