ACCC Draft Determination on Aviation Alliance
Chamber Welcomes ACCC Draft Determination on Aviation Alliance
The Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s draft determination denying authorisation for an alliance between Virgin Blue and Air New Zealand on Trans-Tasman flights.
The Chamber made a submission to the ACCC opposing the Alliance on the grounds that the subsequent reduction in competition is likely to result in increased fares and reduced trans-Tasman flights. The draft determination suggests that we were right to be concerned.
We would expect the New Zealand Minister of Transport to make a similar ruling on this side of the Tasman.
The Chamber is keen to work with Air New Zealand, Pacific Blue and other airlines to ensure that the Wellington-Australia markets are as successful and profitable as possible.
