Local Business Helps Women Dress for Success

It’s a chicken or the egg situation: to get a good job you need smart business clothes; but to afford them you need a job. This is the dilemma faced by many disadvantaged New Zealand women trying to enter the workforce. It’s tough enough to find employment in this current economic climate, without being penalized by not having suitable clothes.

This is where Dress for Success steps in. Their goal is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a support network, and career development. Every client receives a suit and additional apparel upon landing an interview, and up to a weeks worth of clothing if she gets a job.

Tracey Baird, Director of West Auckland Salon Fusion, is a big admirer and has organised a special VIP evening of art, music, fashion and photography to do her bit for the cause. She says: “We’re in the business of helping women look their best. We offer complete makeovers that include hairstyling, make up, nails and fashion styling, so I feel there is a good synergy. It’s nice to help empower women – that’s what we’re all about.”

The event will be held on Tuesday the 28th September at the Fusion studio in Massey. There is no door charge, but guests are asked to donate business clothes on the night. “We don’t need jeans or t-shirts, just clothes suitable for a job interview,” says Tracey. In exchange they will receive a ticket to win a free makeover worth $280.

Several young local artists will donate art to be auctioned, with all proceeds going to Dress for Success. They are: Sarah Alexander (artist), Olivia Jackson (artist/illustrator), Becky Cole (Designer/illustrator), Tracey Baird (photographer), Jane Sullivan (photographer), Mindy Catt (photographer/artist) and Jonathan Catt (designer/maker). Up and coming singer/songwriter, Jess Jackson will set the tone with live original music.

Tracey: “It’s a pleasure bringing creative people together and to give them an opportunity to showcase their talent for a fantastic cause. I really believe in supporting people who help themselves.”
