Dry stock nutritionist updates his message

Dry stock nutritionist updates his message

Farmers have another opportunity to meet and talk with leading British ruminant nutritionist Dr Cliff Lister, who is undertaking his third educational tour across the North and South islands in October.

Dr Lister has championed the introduction to New Zealand of the Crystalyx processed molasses block range from the United Kingdom, marketed and supported by Summit Quinphos.

A regular visitor to these shores, he is keen to impart knowledge that will help local dry stock, sheep and beef, and deer farmers get the most out of their feed, and therefore their stock.

All of his meetings are being held on farms this time, rather than in halls, because the Crystalyx product range has built up its own local history that can be demonstrated to visiting farmers.

Four of the meetings during his two-week tour are open to the public, with each having its own regional theme. Dr Lister is also meeting separately with farm consultants and some of the big users of the Crystalyx range.

The first public meeting is from 10 am at Millers Flat near Roxburgh on Monday 11 October. Former Ballance Agri-Nutrients director Peter MacDougall has been using Crystalyx Dry Cow for more than a year on his beef cows pre and post calving. Dr Lister will explain how Crystalyx Dry Cow fits into the beef breeding system.

The next roadshow event is in Dargaville on Friday 15 October, starting at 11 am on the Mahuta West dairy farm. The theme here is how Crystalyx can help farmers gain benefits from managing their low-quality pastures, such as Kikuyu. One proven technique has stock bringing less palatable pastures under control because of the presence of Crystalyx.

Organic farmers are the focus of the third public meeting, this time on a farm at Mangatawhiri in the Waikato. Dr Lister will demonstrate how Crystalyx Organyx plugs the gaps in the organic farmer’s arsenal, helping to combat milk fever while boosting production. This meeting starts at noon on Monday 18 October at Marphona farm in Bell Road, the biggest certified organic farmer in the country.

The final public event is in the Bay of Plenty on Norman and Barbara Laing’s Lewis Road farm near Whakatane from noon the following day. The focus here is on getting young stock to their live-weight targets to ensure successful mating, and subsequent better calving. Dr Lister will also show how Crystalyx can make better use of low-quality feeds through the summer and autumn.

At all these events, Dr Lister will discuss local issues and mitigation strategies in an open forum, and answer questions, and is keen to chat one-on-one with farmers during the refreshments afterwards.

Farmers wanting to attend one of these events should contact their Summit Quinphos Field Consultant or phone the SQ Customer Services Team on 0800 784 674.
