Church Road awarded top honours

Media Release Wednesday 22 September

Church Road awarded top honours at 2010 New Zealand International Wine Show

Church Road has had a truly outstanding showing at the 2010 New Zealand International Wine Show, with the winery being awarded six gold medals and three trophies, including the highly coveted Champion Wine of the Show accolade for the 2008 Church Road Reserve Chardonnay.

The awards were announced at a dinner in Auckland on 18 September, where Church Road was also awarded the trophy for Champion Chardonnay for the 2008 Church Road Reserve Chardonnay and Champion Viognier for the 2009 Church Road Reserve Viognier.

Graham Bartleet, Hawke’s Bay Regional Viticulture Manager was on-hand to collect the awards, and was ecstatic to see the work of the Church Road wine-making team acknowledged.

“The staff at Church Road are incredibly dedicated and these accolades are a reflection of our commitment to ensuring that we produce top quality New Zealand wines to the very best of our ability," Bartleet said.

Formed in 2005, the New Zealand International Wine Show is firmly established as the largest wine competition held in New Zealand. Truly 'International' in nature, wines from any country and made from any variety can be entered.

The trophy selections were the result of rigorous judging at the beginning of September by many of New Zealand’s most senior wine judges and commentators, who selected the ‘best of the best’ from the over 2,000 wines entered.

The six Gold medals awarded to wines from within the Church Road portfolio, made the popular Hawke’s Bay winery a frontrunner for a trophy, although show convener, Kingsley Wood noted that the 2008 Reserve Chardonnay was a very clear winner.
One of the most visited wineries in Hawke’s Bay, Church Road is also one of the country’s oldest, renowned for producing high quality New Zealand wines by using the very best of traditional winemaking techniques, together with the most modern and innovative concepts.
