Learning Media generates solid profits in a challenging year
Maintaining its focus on developing innovative and effective educational services and products has earned state-owned enterprise Learning Media a pre-tax profit of $2.16 million for the 2009/10 year, on total revenues of $24 million. This result was achieved despite ongoing global economic recession and strong competition in domestic and international markets, said Board Chair, Sandy Maier.
“Learning Media sustained its profitability through strengthening its local consulting and publishing relationships, introducing tight cost controls, improved management and business processes. To ensure we remain competitive, we invested in staff training, digital publishing expertise, and developed our brand service proposition and methodology”, said Sandy Maier.
Learning Media worked with the Ministry of Education to publish the Government’s National Standards for reading, writing and mathematics, and is also involved in the development of Ngā Whanaketanga Rūmaki Māori (the Māori Standards), which are currently being consulted on in Māori-medium schools.
Learning Media’s capability and expertise in learning design gained work with the Ministry of Education and NZQA to further develop NCEA assessment resources. The company also developed literacy resources for adult learners on behalf of the Tertiary Education Commission.
Learning Media’s contract to manage the Ministry of Health’s health education resources was renewed and it gained a new assignment to redevelop the Ministry’s health education website. Research, evaluation and resource development work was also completed for other clients in the health education field.
Internationally,
the company completed contracts for major US publisher
McGraw-Hill and Nelson Canada, and signed an agreement with
Cheneliere Education for the translation of its Dragonflies
non-fiction series into French. Learning Media’s
reputation and commitment to the US market was recognised
with Chief Executive David Gover being the first non-US
member appointed to the influential Association of Education
Publishers (AEP) in June 2010. This appointment gives the
company the opportunity to build stronger partnerships with
leading educational publishers and technological suppliers
in North America.
“In the next year, we’ll continue to explore new opportunities and business partnerships, while delivering the effective, research-based education resources and quality services that our customers demand”, said Sandy Maier.
