Pike River Coal can confirm that there had been a third, but smaller explosion at the mine this afternoon.
Chairman John Dow said that Police at the mine site had confirmed to him that at 3.39pm there was another explosion.
Mr Dow said the explosion was observed on a CCTV camera which is at the portal of the mine.
He said that the Police at the mine told him it was noticeably smaller than the previous two explosions.
