Tony Carter Appointed Chair of the New Zealand Institute

The New Zealand Institute has announced the appointment of Tony Carter as Chair. After two years of dedicated service Dr Keith Turner has stepped down from the role with the thanks and best wishes of the Institute.

Mr Carter brings extensive management experience and governance expertise through his recent role as Managing Director of Foodstuffs Auckland and Foodstuffs New Zealand, and previous roles as owner and operator of several Mitre 10 hardware stores, and Managing Director and Chair of Mitre 10. Mr Carter’s directorships include Vector, Air New Zealand, Fisher and Paykel Healthcare and Fletcher Building. Mr Carter is a trained engineer, having completed his Masters degrees in Canterbury and the United Kingdom.

In response to his appointment Mr Carter said “I believe in what the Institute is doing and the direction in which it is going. I see this opportunity in part as a way to make a contribution and give something back by helping to improve long-term outcomes for all New Zealanders.”

The Institute team warmly welcomes Mr Carter and is looking forward to working with him in its commitment to generating ideas, solutions and debate that will improve economic prosperity, social well-being, environmental quality and environmental productivity.
