Wellington Business Supports Two-Hour Parking Limit
Business supports Wellington City Council’s decision to introduce a two-hour time limit on free parking on Sundays but wants a review of the council’s car parking policy generally.
“The two-hour limit is an appropriate rationing mechanism to bring more people into the city,” said Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce President Richard Stone.
“It will ensure more spaces come available to shoppers and visitors to the CBD generally.
“More people coming into the CBD increases the city’s vibrancy and is good for businesses. The two-hour time limit will facilitate this by providing a higher turnover of cars and increasing access.
“We support the continuation of free weekend parking under the two hour time restrictions.
“We accept the reality of car parking charges during the week but we think there is scope for a review of the council’s different charges and the zones to which they are applied.
“The council’s car parking policy is vital to the economic performance of the city. It is important that the number of car parks and the level of charges and fines are got right. These must be considered in light of broader public transport and suburban centres policies,” Mr Stone concluded.
