Church Road Winery Team Celebrate Second Trophy Win

Church Road Winery Team Celebrate Second Trophy Win

As Lionel Richie was commenting “I'm having the best night of my life," to crowds at the Church Road concert on Saturday night, Church Road winemaker Chris Scott was thinking the same thing, as the Church Road Cuve Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2008 was awarded the Champion Merlot trophy at the 2011 Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.

This is the second year in a row that Church Road has won the highly coveted Champion Merlot trophy at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards with the previous 2007 vintage of the Church Road Cuve Hawke’s Bay Merlot winning the 2010 trophy.

The current 2008 vintage was also awarded Champion Merlot and Gold at the Hawke's Bay A&P Wine Awards.

Senior Winemaker Chris Scott would normally accept this award, but he was in full harvest mode at the Hawke’s Bay winery receiving some outstanding quality grapes as the 2011 vintage has started for the region.

“The entire team at Church Road are extremely proud of the successes and accolades received over the past few years, and are particularly pleased with this recent trophy achieved for the Church Road Cuve Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2008.”

The trophy winning Church Road Cuve Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2008 (RRP $27.99) is part of a series of limited release wines that showcase some of the more experimental wines from the historic Hawke’s Bay winery.

Church Road Cuve Merlot is rich, ripe and serious with good palate weight and length. Fruit was harvested from the vineyards’ warm, stony soils of the Gimblett Gravels wine region. Ripe fruit from this exceptional 2008 vintage was fermented in oak cuves and 70-year-old concrete fermenters prior to maturation in French Oak barriques for a further 22 months.

Church Road Reserve Syrah 2008 also received a gold medal at the same competition.

A total of 1,542 wines were judged in this year’s 58th Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, New Zealand’s oldest wine competition.
