Economic challenges explored in new research

The challenges of growing the economy, building Auckland’s knowledge economy, and getting the emissions trading scheme working for business are explored in a suite of occasional papers released by the Ministry of Economic Development today.

Enhancing Productivity: Towards an Updated Action Agenda, a paper by the Ministry’s Chief Economist Roger Procter, explores how the uncertain process of economic development and growth occurs, and what it means for policy.

Auckland’s Knowledge Economy: Australian and European Comparisons looks at how much Auckland attracts knowledge-intensive activities compared to other cities in New Zealand, Australia and Europe.

Business Responses to the Introduction of the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme profiles how firms are coping with the new scheme and identifies potential issues that may require policy intervention.

Roger Procter said the publication of occasional papers is an important part of the Ministry’s contribution to economic debate and the policy development process.

The papers reflect the views of their various authors, and not necessarily the views of the Ministry or the government.
