NZ Wool Stars At Giant China Expo

In a major win for this country’s wool industry, New Zealand strong wool stole the show at Domotex Asia/China Floor, Asia’s largest flooring exhibition, held between 22 and 24 March in Shanghai, NZ Wool Services International (WSI) Managing Director Michael Dwyer said today.

WSI, the country’s largest wool exporter, secured a premium position to showcase New Zealand strong wool at the high-profile exhibition which attracted a record attendance of over 40,000 Chinese and international manufacturers, architects, designers and other industry professionals.

WSI’s stand, located by the main entrance of the massive exhibition, in the first of a total of 13 halls all displaying floor coverings, attracted a huge amount of interest.

“The opportunity we had for face-to-face marketing with so many major international players will have significant, positive flow-on effects on the demand for New Zealand strong wool which will benefit the whole industry.”
Mr Dwyer said that the tactile nature of WSI’s stand, with the raw wool on display providing a first-time, ‘hands-on’ experience of New Zealand wool for the many buyers and manufacturers, proved a major attraction.

“Although the Chinese market for carpet wool is huge and growing rapidly, many Chinese wool users do not often travel outside China, and we were roundly congratulated for bringing what they saw as a ground-breaking display of our New Zealand product and expertise to their country. Our teams worked non-stop taking meetings and demonstrating and discussing the quality, characteristics and supply of New Zealand strong wool.”

Mr Dwyer, who attended the event with company Director Bert Govan and the WSI marketing and China teams, said that Domotex had been an unprecedented success and that the relationships they had forged would result in increased interest in, and demand for, New Zealand wool from China and many other countries, including the United States, Australia, Mauritius, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Philippines, Turkey, United Kingdom, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Denmark and Ireland.

WSI has already invested heavily in industry-wide marketing initiatives such as the Campaign for Wool, and in establishing its own strong presence in key international markets, and the Domotex initiative was seen as another good, proactive step for the New Zealand industry.

“These initiatives provide a strong platform for the industry to build further on its current success and rising prices. Growers will benefit from increased demand. For our part, WSI with its highly efficient business model is well poised to cope with increased demand.

“Raw wool from our contracted Purelana suppliers goes direct from farm to scour to market – shipped direct as branded Red Band and Purelana deliveries to our international customers It’s the only direct and truly efficient system in the industry supported by the best technology and quality control,” said Mr Dwyer.

WSI currently exports approximately 45 percent of all New Zealand’s coarse wool and is continuing to expand its market share in over 30 countries worldwide.
