Toughening vehicle licensing applauded
Government’s recent announcement on changes to vehicle licensing regulations to help prevent fraud and those evading payment can’t come soon enough says Motor Trade Association (MTA).
MTA spokesperson, Ana Zandi says toughening the penalties for those caught by the Police while driving unlicensed vehicles by introducing demerit points and other measures could help reduce the amount of road users dodging the system.
“MTA has long supported better enforcement of the existing laws. There are people out there who don’t license their vehicle, drive without a licence and without a warrant of fitness (WoF).”
Government estimate there are around 20 percent of road users who are either unlicensed or drive their vehicle without a WoF at any one time.
“Anything that can be done to encourage drivers to comply with licensing regulations is a positive step forward and will ensure that everyone pays their share and contributes.”
“It is unfair for these drivers to be subsidised by those New Zealanders who willingly subvert the law.”
