Mission Accomplished: Cuisine "Best of the Best" White

Award winning Marlborough wine label Spy Valley has been awarded Best White Wine for the 2010 Spy Valley Gewürztraminer in the first Cuisine Magazine Best of the Best 2011.

From 1550 wines tasted over the past year, Cuisine’s wine judges recently re-tasted the top wines from each issue to select the best red, the best white and best sparkling wine.

The judges described the 2010 Spy Valley Gewürztraminer as a luscious example of the joyous, exotic characters that this challenging variety throws out.

“This luscious Kiwi Gewürztraminer captures the unique, decadently lush personality of the grape perfectly. There’s an incredible volume of complex aroma – a cornucopia of rose petals, lychees, oriental spice, floral talcum powder – and an intense palate of excellent depth and structure.”

Spy Valley’s general manager, Blair Gibbs says, “the quality of Marlborough’s aromatic wines is on the rise and receiving best white was a landmark achievement” in Cuisine’s first annual Best of the Best awards.

Making the Gewürztraminer has become an annual highlight for Spy Valley winemaker, Paul Bourgeois. “It’s something of an experimental plaything for me,” he says. “I have a number of different ferments and parcels going. We do things like harvest at different times…the structure becomes more rounded the later you harvest. The 2009 Gewürztraminer was very successful for us – may the 2010 go the same way.”

Best red wine is Trinity Hill Homage Syrah 2007 and best sparkling is the Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1999. To celebrate the awards, four top New Zealand chefs have created lavish Best of the Best menus to match with these award winning wines at Wellington’s Logan Brown on May 15th and Auckland’s Clooney on May 29th.

Spy Valley produces more than 150,000 cases of wine a year in its state of the art winery and is one of New Zealand’s leading family-owned wine companies. The winery takes its brand name from a US satellite communications monitoring base nearby in Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley – a Spy base.
