Kathmandu Reaches 100th Store Milestone

Media Release 20th April 2011

Kathmandu Reaches 100th Store Milestone

Kathmandu reaches a milestone tomorrow with the opening of the retailer’s 100th store in Australasia, at Orange in New South Wales.

The store, which will stock the full range of Kathmandu outdoor gear for travel and adventure, is situated right in the heart of the main street in Orange, opposite Myer. Kathmandu Managing Director, Peter Halkett, believes Kathmandu will be very successful in Orange.

“It is a thriving regional city, with a population of more than 38,000 people. With more than 40 wineries in the region, Orange is also becoming known as a gourmet food capital, which is driving growing numbers of tourists to the area.”

Ten people will be employed in the new store; three in full time management positions, and seven part-time and casual positions.

“Opening in Orange is part of Kathmandu’s ongoing program of rolling out new stores to drive rapid growth”, Mr Halkett said.

The Mayor of Orange Councillor John Davis welcomed the Kathmandu store opening “The fact that Kathmandu has chosen to open in Orange is a testament to the strong retail offer we have in our city. I am sure their faith in Orange will be repaid by our residents and the whole region,” Mr Davis said.

Kathmandu is on track to hit their 15 store target this year. Along with Orange, there are confirmed sites that will open in Cairns in Queensland and Southland in Melbourne, and three in New Zealand, at Whakatane, Coastlands north of Wellington and Ashburton in the South Island, as well as a number of locations to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Mr Halkett said there was similar potential for new stores openings in FY12, with the focus on areas in Australia where Kathmandu is unrepresented.

Kathmandu’s Australian stores have doubled since July 2007, growing from 30 to 60. The store in Orange brings to 18 the number operating in New South Wales.
