Helping Cantabrians find that ‘new job’

Career Services* has developed and launched a purpose-built online tool designed specifically to help Canterbury businesses and workers affected by the earthquake get back to work.

Launched under the name Careers New Zealand the CanterburyJob Matcherlets people build a general picture of what they are good at, what they like and what skills they have. The tool then provides a list of job types that match their skills before displaying related job vacancies in the Canterbury region.

Career Services has worked with TradeMe Jobs to bring their data into the tool to help make it as effective as possible.

Career Services Chief Executive Dr Graeme Benny said the new online tool has been developed to help people either out of work, redundant or looking to change their job, to identify their skills and find vacant positions in the Canterbury region.

Dr Benny said that while an employee who has been displaced by a business closure may not find a job similar to the position they held prior to the earthquake, the interactive tool will assist them in identifying their transferable skills and possible alternative job options.

“Like everyone else at this time, we are learning new ways to tailor our services to help people and businesses in the Canterbury region.”

Career Services’ trained career consultants will be running a series of information workshops in late April/early May to assist local workers to make a successful transition back to new or similar employment. The workshops will cover topics such as using the Canterbury Job Matcher, as well as job search techniques, interview skills and CV and interview preparation.

Career Services will continue towork very closely with, and in support of, all the other critical initiatives underway through government agencies, local organisations and businesses.
