Hotel Industry Awards Recipients announced

The annual Hotel Industry Awards were announced at the conclusion of the New Zealand Hotel Industry Conference on Thursday 12 May. This is the second year that the awards were presented to people in the hotel sector who went above and beyond the call of duty.

The Senior Hotel Executive of the Year Award was presented to Lynne McVicar, General Manager of Hotel St Moritz, Queenstown. After almost a decade as an accountant Ms McVicar entered hotel executive management in 1994 as a financial controller. In 1998 she opened the Hotel St Moritz in Queenstown as General Manager and has remained in the role for the past 13 years. With a career firmly focused on Queenstown, her passion for the industry and operational excellence has not been limited to the Southern Lakes region. Ms McVicar is known for her generous commitment of time on boards and in advisory roles within the tourism sector.

Independent Chair of the New Zealand Hotel Council and spokesperson for the conference co-hosts, Jennie Langley, says “With an impressive and sustained track record within her hotel and the wider community Lynne is an extremely worthy recipient of the award”.

The Outstanding Young Hotel Executive of the Year Award was presented to Alison Shirley, Human Resources Manager – Corporate for Heritage Hotel Management. Ms Shirley’s role includes managing and overseeing HR activities and initiatives for over 600 employees across eleven hotels.

Ms Langley said it is thrilling to recognise outstanding young talent in our hotel industry, which is very much focused on people. “Knowing that we have people like Alison who are focused on staff development and retention is fantastic, particularly when we continuously strive to promote hospitality as a very real and highly fulfilling career option.”
