New Zealand Company finds niche in market offering Low Salt Season Blends

As a nation we are consuming an average of 3,600 milligrams of sodium per day while the recommendation for a healthy adult is 2,300 mg per day and 1,600 mg for children.

“We need to find new ways to flavour our food instead of using straight salt and pepper” says Julia Page, Founder of New Zealand company, One Spice®, producer of low salt season blends.

“If you remove the salt and pepper shakers from the table and replace them with Greek One Spice® you will be able to cut down on your salt intake by 80% with each use,” she explains.

Greek One Spice® is the first product of eight low salt condiments the company produces and is a blend of garlic, oregano, celery, Himalayan mineral salt and pepper. “The salt we use, is one of the oldest salts on earth containing over 84 essential minerals and elements your body needs including iodine”, explains Julia.

“However, too much salt increases the risk of health problems, including high blood pressure, which is why we have decided to develop our product range of low salt season blends” says Julia. An estimated 30 percent of Americans over the age of 20 have hypertension or take blood pressure lowering medication. Rates are also increasing in children, and a recent study reported hypertension in children has increased from 7.7 percent to 10 percent. Once high blood pressure has developed it tends to last for life. High blood pressure puts a strain on the heart and circulatory system which can ultimately result in damage.

Medical experts want to see nutrition labels on all foods with high sodium and are calling for a 50 percent reduction in the amount of salt in packaged and processed foods coming out of the United States. “Cutting our sodium intake by half would prevent 150,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease each year” according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in the USA.

“We want to show you how herbs and spice added with a small amount of salt can really make a difference to the flavour of your food.” says Julia. “Our Garlic & Chives One Spice® contains only 18 mg of sodium per serving, and our Smoky Bacon One Spice® only contains 32 mg.”

claims Julia. “None of our products are high in sodium, and we will continue to provide products that are packed full of flavour, not salt! All of our bottles have a nutrition label so that our customers know what they're buying - a healthy product. New Zealand spice manufacturers aren’t currently required by law to include a nutrition label on products. A good example of this is Lemon Pepper which leads the consumer into believing the product contains lemon and pepper, and that they're cutting down on salt. However, it is full of salt - sometimes as high as 900 milligrams of sodium per serving”, says Julia.

One Spice® has introduced their newest flavour, Lemon Pepper – Mediterranean Style which contains only 52 mg of sodium per serving which is shown on the nutrition label.

This is their second product intended to be used instead of salt and pepper. “We add other flavours to dazzle the taste buds in our Lemon Pepper - flavours from the Mediterranean like sweet basil, oregano, garlic, sweet red capsicum and crushed red pepper, as well as lemon zest and black pepper. You can cut down on salt without compromising the flavour,” claims Julia.

“Coming from a family of Greek chefs, flavour is very important to us.” she explains. We learn to crave salt, but studies suggest we can train our taste buds to prefer less in just a few months which will likely result to eating healthier. This can now be made a little easier for the New Zealand consumer with One Spice® low salt season blends. They are all natural, no MSG, are vegetarian, gluten free and made in New Zealand! One Spice® products come in a large 85g shaker retailing for $7.99, all available at The Aussie Butcher, select New World's and Fresh Choice stores .

One Spice® is available in bulk for restaurants and Food Manufacturers as well. See the website OneSpice.co.nz for more stockists. A free e-Cookbook is also offered, full of the family’s recipes at recipe@onespice.co.nz.
