Godfrey Hirst to appeal Commerce Commission decision
Godfrey Hirst to appeal decision to create a monopoly in wool scouring
New Zealand’s largest carpet manufacturer, Godfrey Hirst, said today that it was extremely disappointed with the authorisation granted by the Commerce Commission which sanctions a monopoly in the New Zealand wool souring market. The authorisation allows for Cavalier Wool to purchase the shares or assets of Wool Services International.
Godfrey Hirst General Manager, Tania Pauling, said that it would be appealing the authorisation granted by the Commission. “We have instructed our lawyers to commence the appeal process to the High Court. We are very concerned with the decision, particularly given that it accords with the draft determination which we considered to be seriously flawed. We are struggling to see how a regulatory body can allow for a monopoly in a key New Zealand industry, which will have implications not only for direct users of New Zealand scouring but also for the woolgrowers, manufacturers and end users of products, which utilise New Zealand coarse wool.”
