Humanitarian engineering conference a NZ first

New Zealand’s first humanitarian-engineering conference next month will bring together development and engineering experts for the first time at Engineering Change 2011.

Hosted by Engineers Without Borders NZ (EWB) – Nga Kaihanga Kore Here O Aotearoa – Engineering Change 2011 will connect professionals, students, academics and industry experts.

“Our vision is to increase awareness of the role of engineers in community development, and to build knowledge and capacity in humanitarian engineering,” says Sam Davies, EWB Executive Director.

“We strive for a world where sustainable engineering practice can help communities meet their own goals”

In terms of humanitarian-engineering, many New Zealanders are leading experts in sustainable development, disaster preparation and relief and engineering practice.

Questions that will be discussed include: Does aid increase poverty? Can 1st world thinking solve 3rd world problems? Does volunteerism make a difference in our world? As an engineer, how can you make a difference?

Through, Engineering Change 2011, EWB seeks to unite stakeholders from a range of backgrounds to strengthen links between New Zealand’s engineering, development and voluntary sectors.
