Growing Visitor Numbers Reinforce Wellington’s
need for a Convention Centre
Accommodation data released today showing continuing growth in Wellington’s international guest nights is further confirmation that the city needs to be investing in visitor infrastructure according to the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.
International visitor numbers to Wellington were up 12% in April compared with the same time last year. This follows a 5% increase in March and makes Wellington one of the fastest growing destinations nationwide.
“Wellington’s increasing international attention means now is the time to invest in the region’s visitor infrastructure and facilities,” said Chamber CEO Ken Harris.
“One significant gap in Wellington’s range of amenities is a world standard convention centre.
“This is a must for Wellington. It is something the Chamber has been pushing for a long time. It would capitalise on the growing interest in Wellington as a destination as well as its geographical position in the centre of the country and bring people to the city.
“Central city locations including the waterfront and the stadium concourse should be considered for a convention centre.
“The Chamber has consistently advocated investment in infrastructure which attracts people and businesses.
“A convention centre would compliment Wellington City Council’s exciting plans to spruce up the city by 2040.
“But Wellington needs to take decisive action now. Wellington is at crucial juncture in its economic development and a convention centre would provide a timely boost as demand for conference facilities in New Zealand grows.
“As well as a convention centre, the figures also reinforce the need for increased hotel space, new visitor attractions as well as long haul flights into Wellington,” Mr Harris concluded.
