Last chance to register for competitions

Last chance to register for line mechanic and cable jointer competitions

Registrations close this Friday (26 August) for the Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) line mechanic and cable jointer competitions.

The competitions are a major part of the three-day Annual Connection, which will run from November 1-3 at Hamilton’s Mystery Creek Events Centre.

Premier sponsors TransNet NZ Ltd and TE Connectivity say the competitions are an important part of the industry and the perfect platform for field staff to showcase their skills and see how they stack up against their counterparts.

“There is so much to be learnt from each other and we believe these competitions are the perfect environment for that to take place,” said general manager of TransNet NZ Ltd, Ed Cheeseman.

“Bringing contractors and networks together in one arena for three days to display how they do things is priceless.

“The calibre of the participants also improves year on year which is great to see – it means the competitors are taking it seriously and really do want to be crowned as the best in the industry.”

This year’s line mechanic teams will compete in 13 events including new events covering equipotential zones, pole testing, binding and terminating and switching.

Cable jointers will compete in six events including HV jointing (using XLPE cable), responding to a workplace accident and taking a theory exam.

TransNet has been associated with the line mechanic competition since 2002, expanding its sponsorship in 2009 to become premier sponsor. TE Connectivity’s involvement with the cable jointer competition began in 2008.

For Jason Woodcock, industry manager of TE Connectivity’s energy division, supporting the cable jointer competition has been an easy choice.

“As a well-known and widely trusted brand of cable accessories, many of the competitors use our gear every day so this is an opportunity to support them and their companies.

“We’re able to give something back to them, while at the same time we are able to interact with different levels of staff that we may not otherwise get to see.”
