Powershop bringing movies to the people

Powershop bringing movies to the people

Online electricity retailer Powershop is partnering with New Zealand On Screen to help international visitors to New Zealand discover the best of Kiwi cinema, television, music videos and more.

Powershop will be wiring up two shipping containers and a classic Kiwi caravan, turning them into mobile cinema experiences to showcase Kiwi films during Rugby World Cup 2011.

An initiative of the website NZ On Screen, the cinemas are part of the REAL New Zealand Festival, a nationwide celebration of Kiwi identity, arts and culture. Powershop CEO Ari Sargent says when his company heard about the project they leapt at the chance to support it.

“Kiwi films really capture the essence of our country - often gritty, but always memorable,” says Sargent.

“The project appealed to us as a great way to show visitors who we are off the field, as well as on it.”

Sargent says helping to transform the containers and the caravan into functioning cinemas fitted perfectly with Powershop’s commitment to homegrown innovation and technology.

“We think visitors should see what real New Zealanders are like. Watching Billy T in a souped-up retro caravan somewhere in the South Island? What could be more Kiwi than that?”

People can follow the caravan as it tours its way around the country through the blog site http://real.nzonscreen.com
