Rainbow Republic result for Kiwi harness racing

New Zealand harness racing will receive significant exposure in a major international market with confirmation of a partnership to broadcast selected racing in South Africa.

An agreement between the New Zealand Racing Board, Tabcorp-owned Sky Racing and South African racing broadcaster Phumelela Gold Enterprises will see regular New Zealand harness racing broadcast in the Rainbow Republic, starting with selected races from Cambridge on Thursday, October 20.

NZ Racing Board Chairman Michael Stiassny said the agreement would deliver significant exposure for New Zealand harness racing in what was a large and potentially lucrative market – both for the industry and punters.

“Thoroughbred racing is well established in South Africa but harness racing is quickly gaining in popularity and support.

“As well as offering exposure for the wider industry in New Zealand, this partnership will also bring benefits for New Zealand punters with a commingling agreement allowing for larger win and place pools.”

Harness Racing New Zealand Chief Executive Edward Rennell said the partnership represented an exciting opportunity for the Code.

“It takes New Zealand harness racing to a new and large market, which will serve to further enhance the international profile of the industry.”

The deal allows for the broadcast of up to 300 New Zealand harness races a year, with most to come from Thursday and Friday evening meetings.
