B+LNZ scholarship takes young Marton farmer to Mexico
Marton farmer, Richard Morrison, has been awarded the Beef + Lamb New Zealand agricultural scholarship that will take him to the Five Nations Beef Alliance and Young Ranchers Programme being held in Mexico later this month.
Richard (32), was selected from a strong line-up of candidates vying for the chance to represent and promote New Zealand beef, as well as helping to foster international relations within the beef industry.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand People and Capability Manager, Diane Falconer said Richard, who is farming a large scale sheep, beef and cropping business in the Western North Island, will be a great ambassador for New Zealand at the conference.
The Five Nations Beef Alliance draws its membership from the beef farming nations including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, USA and Mexico. Almost half of the world’s beef and cattle exports come from these countries.
The Alliance has been operating since the early 1980’s and is charged with pushing for trade liberalisation.
“The role of the Five Nations Beef Alliance is to collectively work for better global beef trade opportunities.”
The Alliance launched the Young Ranchers Programme last year with the aim of attracting young leaders from each nation who are passionate about the future direction of the beef industry.
Richard will be required to report back to New Zealand beef farmers on what he has learned in the Programme.
“The thought of travelling to Mexico to rub shoulders with other passionate beef producers is an unimaginably exciting prospect,” he said.
