Paper on Fracking under the RMA
The Regional Council Chief Executive Officers recently approved the attached sector paper on managing hydraulic fracturing activities under the RMA.
The use of fracking to stimulate the flow of hydrocarbons has generated quite a bit of media interest in recent months, with conservation groups alleging damage to aquifers from the practice. This paper is an attempt by Regional Councils to learn from the experience gained by the Taranaki Regional Council over the past 10 years, since the Taranaki Region is the only place where fracking of conventional oil and gas wells has occurred.
