New Sealord Chair to lead premium export growth

New Sealord Chair to lead premium export growth

Sealord’s newly appointed Chairman of the Board, Matanuku Mahuika, believes the business is poised for growth and uniquely positioned to win in the global export market.

“My vision for Sealord is to continue growing our premium exports. Sealord has a finite and precious resource, our challenge is to work with discerning partners around the world who recognise the value of sustainable seafood,” he says.

Mahuika, a Wellington based commercial lawyer, follows Robin Hapi as Chairman of New Zealand’s best known seafood company.

As a contemporary business leader he is passionate about the balancing of profitability and sustainability.

“Commercial success and sustainability are entirely compatible. Environmentally aware retailers and consumers around the world want sustainable seafood and they’re willing to pay a premium for it,” he says.

“Sealord is much more than a commercially driven corporate. Our ownership means guardianship is an essential part of how we do business and I believe Iwi can take pride in Sealord’s achievements and approach to success.”

Mahuika sees Sealord as an iconic New Zealand company with valuable international links. He believes building on this reputation around the globe will see benefits for the business and the country’s seafood export industry.

Sealord’s fifty percent ownership by leading Japanese fishing company, Nissui, provides strategically important links to the global market and leading innovation.

“Sealord’s long term objective is to substantially increase the percentage of value-added seafood we sell and ensure our fish is not seen as a commodity product. The reputation of the brand, our ownership and ongoing investment in high quality processing capability will be vital to achieving this,” says Mahuika. * *
