Unspent goat levies allocated to five projects

Beef + Lamb New Zealand has allocated the $115,000 of unspent goat levies to five projects to benefit the New Zealand goat industry.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand General Manager – Farm, Richard Wakelin said the projects supported are:

• Wormwise for goats – developing an authoratative information resource detailing how to manage internal parasites in goats in New Zealand = $44,200 (developed by Ginny Dodunski of Totally Vets Ltd).
• Developing a set of practical guidelines for feral goats covering mustering, goat-proof fencing, feeding, animal health and optimum weight for slaughter = $7,500 (developed by Greta Baynes, Taranaki Vet Centre).
• Meat Goat New Zealand to provide a stable support structure to represent goat farmers = $14,000.
• Establish effective dose rates of anthelmintics for goats = $29,356 (developed by Dr DC Simcock and Prof WE Pomroy from Massey University).
• Improve the farmability of goats by reducing the cost of parasites = $20,000 (developed by Dave Brown and Richard Shaw of the Mohair Producers Association Inc and AgResearch Ltd).
