New Online Networking Model for NZ Businesses

- ‘Greener Living NZ’ -

A recent study found that over 54% of New Zealanders do not want to engage with brands via social media (REF 1). Wildfire Solutions, a Social Media Marketing Company based in Timaru found that many New Zealand businesses were struggling to perform in the social media space. This article takes a closer like into this topic and offers a solution to increase engagement.

Simply put, social media is a conversation, taking place online. The most common social media spaces you’ll find New Zealand businesses include Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as well as a having some form of Blogging site. It is a known fact that word-of-mouth (WOM) advertising is the most effective form of advertising. If your company can engage and have a relevant conversation online, you are then very effectively advertising your brand through WOM, getting results and improving your triple bottom line.

One rule online is that if your company has something to say that will add value to the online conversation then say it, if you don’t, then don’t say it - (You’re just wasting everyone’s time!). Through past experience with New Zealand businesses online, Wildfire found that an alarming number of these businesses that had set up their own individual Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or Blog site…

1. Only sporadically had something to say online that was worth saying, with some posting uninteresting &/or irrelevant information to their followers to ‘fill the gap’;

2. Their following (fan base) was small in comparison to those larger companies online;

3. Their budget was limited, so too was their advertising online to build their following;

4. They didn’t have time to spend updating their Social Networks.

In response to these results, Wildfire set out to develop a new and improved Online Networking Model for businesses.

Initially, Wildfire Solutions pooled together resources by creating one online network that would promote a group of complementary businesses. Thus began the Greener Living NZ concept. A Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and blogging site was set up by Wildfire for the Greener Living NZ network. Those business that fell under the ‘Greener Living’ umberella can now begin to build their online persona as a team, across these sites and out to a targeted following. Kelly from Wildfire says that ‘The conversation online is now flowing much more smoothly for these businesses. By having a network that is regularly and consistently updated, with a variety of quality information we find that people are now listening and engaging more’. Kelly also noted that the following is growing quicker in the network than if the business were to do it alone, creating a larger target market for the businesses to engage with online. Wildfire manages these social media profiles for the business, posting regularly on those social networks with the content sent through from the company.

Jamie Lunam, Manager of Devan Plastics in Tauranga and currently a part of the Greener Living Network says: “We are so busy and to have Wildfire manage our online presence is a godsend. They have created an online network that people really want to be a part of and it doesn’t cost the earth.”

By opting to join into this online conversation in a relevant network of complementary businesses, Wildfire have made it affordable for smaller businesses in both time and money, to effectively create an online presence for themselves.
