Maori communities key to NZ’s Forestry success

One of the hidden strengths behind forestry’s success lies with the humble and hard-working nature of those who lead the many small and medium companies who produce the goods day in and day out.

“Maori people’s participation in forestry is the backbone of its success”, says John Stulen, Director of FIEA, the Forestry Industry Engineering Association.

“Few companies who work in the forestry sector make much noise about their successes – but more and more new suppliers to the industry are realizing the true value of becoming connected to the sector.”

The current climate is the opposite of a ‘perfect storm’. Forestry’s export performance since June 2009 has bucked all of the economic trends of most other sectors in NZ and although Maori are key players in the industry, their full potential is yet to be realised.

“We want Maori trusts and authorities to be connected with key industry leaders that can help them achieve optimal results in their business”, says John.

Accordingly this years’ Future Forestry Finance Conference is going to be popular with Maori trustees, key industry suppliers and service providers, especially those wanting to gain new information on the forest industry’s direction and challenges for growth in the coming quarters, years and decades.

The conference to be held from March 7-8 at the Crowne Plaza in Auckland will see Maori forestry trustees flock to the event in large numbers. Recognising the value of the biennial event has Finance company executives and those involved in administering these trusts and other forestry businesses keen to learn more about its production as well as to network with key industry individuals.

The Forestry Industry Engineering Association is NZ’s largest forestry technical association and is responsible for the delivery of industry networking opportunities and raising awareness of advancing wood technology. It’s the principle vehicle for technology transfer for forestry wood transfer and wood products companies.
