Sevens
Wellington businesses are looking forward to one of the city’s biggest weekends as sevens fans and party-goers arrive in numbers.
“The Wellington Sevens is a fantastic advertisement for the city and the contribution it makes to the local economy is significant,” said Chamber President Richard Stone.
“The benefits of the tournament to Wellington have been quantified at $15.6 million and 239 FTE jobs.
“More than this – the event portrays Wellington internationally as a great place to live and visit.
“It is not just the retail, hospitality, accommodation and costume hire sectors that benefit from the tournament. All businesses and the entire Wellington economy benefit indirectly from the annual event.
“Of course, the benefits are mutual with the sevens fans enjoying the product businesses have to offer as well as the attractions of the city as a whole.
“There are a number of factors contributing to why the Wellington tournament is such a success, including the way the city gets behind the event as well as the central location of Westpac Stadium.
“The decision just over a year ago to retain the
tournament in Wellington was a great relief,” Mr Stone
concluded.
