Beef + Lamb New Zealand welcomes PGP announcement
Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed today’s announcement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry that its joint industry Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) application has progressed to the business planning stage.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand Chairman, Mike Petersen said there is still a lot of work to do, but the support from PGP alongside the investment from farmers and a range of industry and service providers, will enable a step change in the performance of the sector.
“This PGP application is for a programme of work that will develop on-farm management tools to capture the opportunities outlined in the Red Meat Sector Strategy.
“Importantly, this PGP programme does not duplicate work already underway in other programmes and is required to work alongside other successful applicants.”
Petersen said the farmer contribution to the programme will come via farmer reserves currently held by the New Zealand Meat Board, which will be leveraged alongside the funding contributions of the other partners and the Government.
“Approval to invest farmer reserves was sought and gained in the 2009 referendum, and this will be reconfirmed as part of the round of Beef + Lamb New Zealand farmer meetings each year.
“In progressing to the business case stage of PGP we will now focus on the detailed work programme alongside our partners and the Government,” Petersen said.
