EPMU Supports Workers Facing Airline Job Cuts
A major union representing Air
New Zealand employees, the EPMU, says it is very
disappointing to see jobs being slashed at the
airline.
Air New Zealand announced today that it would be
cutting a total of 441 jobs by the end of the financial
year, blaming rising fuel prices and a struggling
international tourism market.
The EPMU says about 30 of its members face redundancy, across a number of business units in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
“Given our Union’s efforts in recent years to contribute to boosting company performance and productivity, it’s very disappointing to see the company cutting jobs without talking to us first,” says Strachan Crang, EPMU Assistant Director of Organising. “We understand the company’s position but we would have liked the opportunity to discuss alternatives before heading down the redundancy path.”
Mr Crang says the company has initiated a formal redundancy process in a number of business units triggering a consultation phase which will run through to late next month.
