Nosh pledges cheaper milk for March

Food shoppers will continue to get cheaper milk during March with Nosh Food Market extending its $2 for two litres of milk offer until the end of the month.

In early February Nosh launched what it originally said would be a one-month campaign for cheaper milk and director Clinton Beuvink says the response has been “more than amazing”.

“Consumers support our drive to reduce the retail price of milk,” Mr Beuvink says. “The feedback we are getting is that consumers are fed up with paying too much for everyday New Zealand-produced goods such as milk.”

Mr Beuvink says making excessive margins on milk is ‘anti kiwi’.

“Nosh has been accused of selling milk at a low price as a marketing ploy to get people to come in and pay higher prices for other goods. Our response is that we think it’s simply a good idea.

“We don’t think it’s right the way supermarkets loss-lead unhealthy junk food and soft drinks and then make fat profits on a healthy food product such as milk. For these retailers milk is the proverbial ‘cash cow’.”

Mr Beuvink says he is encouraged people are starting to get the message that they don’t have to pay high prices for milk.

“This campaign is working and people are investigating where they can find the best deals on milk. Nationally there have been articles in the media providing consumers with the ‘good oil’ on where they can find the best-priced milk. And it’s often from their local convenience store.”

Mr Beuvink says Nosh will continue to make a loss on milk during March.

“We are working on some good ideas that we hope will deliver us a sustainable great value milk offer.”

Cow & Gate milk (two litre bottles only) is available at all Nosh locations until 31 March 2012 at the fixed price of $1 a litre ($2 per 2 litre bottle).
