Shoppers welcome the sensible season
Executive Summary
If December is the month when the retail sector goes flat out, January is when merchants and consumers take an entirely predictable breather. It is, after all, a season of respite – thus it’s quite logical to expect spending activity to ease markedly. And given the frenetic activity of the Rugby World Cup, we’d say a lot of people more than earned their summer holidays this year.
It’s also worth reflecting that it was about this time last year that tragedy befell so many in Christchurch and our thoughts remain with those who lost so much. Despite the scale of disaster, it is truly inspirational to see the spirit and tenacity displayed by so many people and businesses getting back on their feet in defiance of the challenges that they have faced.
