Pike River sale to Solid Energy good news for mining says miners’ union
The sale of Pike River Mine to Solid Energy is good news for mining in New Zealand, says the union representing miners, the EPMU.
“We have a history of sound and constructive working relationships with Solid Energy,” says Ged O’Connell, EPMU assistant national secretary. “The EPMU expects this to continue with the Pike River operation and the challenges this will involve.”
“We are also pleased that Solid Energy will work on recovering the bodies of the 29 men who died in the mine in November 2010 as part of the purchase arrangement. This is great news for the families of the men.”
The EPMU has over 900 members working in mining of the West Coast with the majority of members working for Solid Energy operations.
