Global airline pilot demand creates opportunities for New Zealanders

Hamilton, 26 March 2012 – Ian Calvert, CEO of CTC Aviation Training (NZ) Limited, told aspiring pilots attending the company’s open day on Saturday, 24 March, that record global pilot demand means it’s a great time for New Zealanders to consider a career in aviation.

“Never before in history has there been such a high demand for airline pilots. In 2010, Boeing released figures showing that 466,650 airline pilots are required globally from now through to 2029.

“Thirty-nine percent (39%) of those pilots are required in our Asia Pacific region alone. Boeing has said two main factors are driving this demand: airlines growing their fleets and a major wave of pilot retirements worldwide.

“This historical demand for airline pilots means it’s a great time for Kiwis to consider a career in the industry,” explained Mr Calvert.

The global leader in airline pilot training held its annual open day at its state-of-the-art Crew Training Centre in Hamilton on Saturday. It was attended by a record number 153 people. Some travelled as far as Takaka in Golden Bay to discover what it takes to be accepted into CTC’s pilot training programmes.

Of particular interest to inquiring young people was the company’s Jetstar Ab-Initio Cadet Programme which is intended for candidates with limited or no previous flying experience.

Jetstar’s Training Captain and Flight Operations Development Manager, Captain Richard Faulkner, spoke to open day attendees about the state of the Australasian aviation industry and employment with the airline. He also chronicled his own career path into the industry and how he went from an ab-initio trainee to Captain - all by the age of 32.

Additionally, three First Officers were on hand to discuss what it takes to land a career with an airline. The First Officers were from Jetstar, Air New Zealand and Eagle Airways.
