Online
The Department of Labour’s Jobs Online report shows skilled job vacancies decreased by a seasonally adjusted 3.1 percent in April compared to March, while all online job vacancies fell by 2.4 percent.
Online skilled job vacancies fell by 3.1 percent compared with a year ago. However, all vacancies increased by 3.4 percent compared to April 2011.
“Vacancies have fluctuated around a flat trend over the past year, and the Department anticipates gradual recovery in employment over the coming year. The Department forecasts employment growth of 1.8 percent in the 2013 March year and 2.4 percent in the 2014 March year,” says the Department of Labour Head of Research, Vasantha Krishnan.
Skilled job vacancies fell across most industry groups in April compared with March. However, vacancies in construction and engineering rose by 9.7 percent in the month.
The Wellington region was
flat in April, increasing by 0.2 percent. Skilled vacancies
fell in all other regions. The Canterbury region had one of
the biggest falls in vacancies (down by 5.0 percent).
However, Canterbury showed the strongest annual growth in
skilled vacancies of any region (up by 21 percent). The
strong growth in the region has been driven by the demand
for skilled workers in construction and engineering (up by
55 percent), and healthcare and medical (up by 41
percent).
