Corrections Confirms New Unified Structure
The Department of Corrections has confirmed that following consultation with staff, 130 positions will be disestablished as part of the restructure and reorganisation of National Office and some regional offices.
“I know that this has been a testing time for many of our staff and I thank them for their patience and professionalism during this time. As a result of staff consultation there has been a small reduction in the number of positions lost compared to what we proposed in May,” says Corrections’ Chief Executive, Ray Smith. “Frontline staff will not be affected.”
“My aim is to bring together our three service arms - prisons, rehabilitation and probation - to work as one team and be responsible for the day to day management and rehabilitation of all offenders across the country.
“By doing this we can more easily target the underlying causes of their offending, and work together to co-ordinate the management of each of them at every stage to offer programmes and training with the aim of reducing re-offending by twenty five percent by 2017.”
In addition to unifying our efforts to reduce re-offending the changes will deliver $10 million in efficiencies for reprioritisation.
“Overwhelmingly, feedback from staff was supportive of the change,” says Mr Smith.
