Moa beer marks medal haul milestone

Kiwi craft brewery records top medal count at the Asia Beer Awards

For the second year running Moa beer has chalked up the biggest medal haul of any brewery at the Asia Beer Awards.

Hot on the heels of a stellar effort at the Australian Beer Awards, the Blenheim brewery picked up seven medals – one gold, two silver and four bronze – to beat out over one hundred other breweries from around the world.

In a nod to the growing momentum of Kiwi craft beer, Moa general manager Gareth Hughes was invited to judge 18 styles of beer. Tough job...

“It’s always a tough competition with incredibly talented brewers and industry folk from all over Asia Pacific and the rest of the World. It feels great to have come away with another big win but personally I’m really honoured to be counted amongst some genuine good bastards,” says Hughes.

The Moa beer medal haul includes:

Gold medal
Moa Imperial Pilsner (Special Reserve) - World, Strong Ale/Lager

Silver medal
Moa St Josephs – World, Belgian Blonde Ale
Moa Breakfast – World, Flavoured Beer

Bronze medal
Moa Blanc – World, Krystal Weiss
Moa Pale Ale – World, Pale Ale
Moa Five Hop – World, India Pale Ale
Weka Pear Cider – World, (non-apple) Cider

“We’re especially proud of the two bronzes for the Blanc and Pale Ale as we were up against some tough competition from US craft juggernauts Rouges and Lagunitas. The Blanc win also completed the medal count for our full set of beers – a clean sweep for the team.

“We’re also rapt to have some New Zealand company on the podium. Yeastie Boys was awarded the Champion Brew trophy for Pot Kettle Black, Tuatara grabbed a couple of bronze medals and Green Man secured a gold,” Hughes says.

About Moa Beer
Moa Beer is brewed with fresh locally produced hops and without adjuncts such as rice, sugar or corn. It’s made the way beer used to be made, before everyone started making it differently. Fastidiously handcrafted in the traditional method and rounded off through the use of winemaking techniques, including barrel ageing and bottle fermentation and conditioning (like they do with Champagne). Because making (and drinking) the same thing every day becomes boring, Moa comes in 10 varieties: The Estate range: Moa Methode, Moa Blanc, Moa Noir, Moa Pale Ale; the Reserve range: Moa Imperial Stout, Moa St Josephs, Moa Blanc Evolution, Moa Five Hop and Moa Breakfast; and Moa Original. Moa also comes in a variety of different sizes: from 330ml, through 375ml and 750ml, up to 1.5L magnums and 3L jeroboams to make you look extra-cool at parties.
